Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer, Photography

Queensland College of Art

Established in 1881, the  Queensland College of Art  (QCA) is one of Australia’s oldest and among its largest Art Academies. The Queensland College of Art, incorporating the Griffith Film School, is a thriving community of photographers, artists, designers, and film-makers and plays a significant role in shaping the state of Queensland and Australia’s art and design culture.

In QCA’s Photography program, students are introduced to the craft, politics, language, theory and ethics of the image. In addition to offering students specialised learning within the defined disciplinary majors of the program, the QCA also enables study in photographic practices and theory to be integrated with learning in other creative fields. At the QCA this will include access to resources and activities in Fine Art, Design and Film programs. Photography also has a small but highly active cohort of Research Honours and Higher Degree Research (HDR) PhD, Doctoral and Masters’ candidates.

The QCA is seeking to appoint a highly capable and experienced photography academic with a nationally / internationally recognised practice-based theoretically-informed research profile.

The successful applicant will excel as a researcher in one of the broad artistic/professional arenas relating to photography, including the domains of Photographic Art, Photojournalism and Documentary, and Advertising and have proven track-record of successful leadership in an academic environment, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a focus on photography.

The appointee will be capable of leading developments in innovative forward looking curriculum design, exploring new modes of practice-based learning, including online learning, and fostering the production of high-quality research outputs in collective contexts. The role requires high level experience in curriculum development and the ability to contribute to the advancement of the expanding field of photography through active participation in the leadership of the creative practice research environment.

An appreciation of the value of theory, traditional methodologies and histories and new technologies of photography, in addition to the potential of ‘photographic approaches’ within diverse fields of human endeavour is essential. Additionally, an understanding of the ways photographic practices can draw on, and be embedded within, a broad range of creative practices and professional contexts will be equally important.

This is a continuing, full time position based at the South Bank campus.
