Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences City, University of London – School of Arts and Social Sciences

City, University of London is a global university committed to academic excellence, with a focus on business and the professions and an enviable central London location.

City attracts around 19,500 students (35% postgraduate), is top in London for student satisfaction (Complete University Guide), well above the sector average for graduate employability in most subjects and eleventh in the UK for starting salaries. City joined the University of London in 2016.

In the last REF City doubled the proportion of its total academic staff producing world-leading or internationally excellent research.

Led by President Professor Sir Paul Curran, City has made significant investments in its academic staff, its estate and its infrastructure and continues to work towards realising its vision of being a leading global university: it has recently agreed a new Vision & Strategy 2026.

The School of Arts & Social Sciences has around 160 academics and over 3,000 students across its broad range of arts and social science disciplines. Over the next five years, the School will increase academic staff and student numbers by a third and develop education and research in three new subject areas: English, Politics and Modern History. Investment will support its ambition to become a major centre for quantitative social science in London.

City is seeking to appoint the full-time Dean to lead the School.

Reporting to the Deputy President & Provost, the Dean is responsible for the School’s academic and financial performance. The Dean’s priorities are to lead the School through an exciting period of strategic development, to strengthen further its culture of academic excellence and to identify and nurture areas for collaboration within and beyond City.

The appointed candidate will demonstrate a strong academic track record, ideally with research of world-leading or internationally excellent quality; success in academic and financial management in an environment of relevant scale; outstanding strategic, interpersonal and communication skills; the judgement and maturity to manage complex relationships; and the standing to lead the School, act as its ambassador and contribute to the leadership of the institution.

City offers a sector-leading salary, pension scheme and other benefits including a comprehensive package of staff training and development.
