The BA (Hons) Photography course is one of the largest and most successful in the School of Arts and Creative Industries. The course positions itself at the forefront of creative photographic education, with students working on a diverse range of projects, spanning both the practical and theoretical, the commercial and artistic. The aim is for our students to develop into innovative practitioners who can successfully lead developments in the expanded field of photography, working across a range of roles in the creative industries. The course has pioneered a number of professional practice initiatives to support our students’ employability, including a student run commercial photography agency, called the South Bank Collective.
We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified, experienced and highly committed Lecturer in Photography. You will be a practicing photographer with experience of working on both self-initiated projects and commercial commissions, demonstrating that you can develop your research through knowledge transfer, professional practice and/or publication to contribute to the next REF in 2020.
You will bring extensive knowledge of working with clients from either editorial, commercial, fashion or advertising, and an ability to teach students about creative and technical approaches to projects, and the business side of working as a photographer.
The successful candidate will work as part of a team to continue to develop the curriculum, approaches to teaching and learning and the internal and external profile of the course. You will facilitate the development of professional networks and maintain ongoing partnerships with media producers as an important step in boosting the employability of our graduates. You will have an understanding of current debates and theoretical issues relevant to photographic practice with a student centred approach, excellent organizational and communication skills, and the ability to both inspire and guide students.
You will be an energetic and engaging lecturer with experience of designing and delivering high quality, innovative teaching and learning. You will have excellent knowledge of professional digital workflow, from capture to output for print and screen, and be able to teach practical photography modules that range in their ambition from introducing first year students to the basics of working in the studio and on location, to working with third year students on self-directed projects exploring cutting edge digital technologies.
In addition teaching and research; the successful candidate will also take on administrative duties, which will include engaging in the periodic quality processes of the university. You will also be responsible for leading one year of the degree and acting as a personal tutor. Reporting to the Head of Division, the successful applicant will take up a portfolio of teaching within the School’s Division of Film and Media.
