The Beautyful Ones

Published by Victoria Miro

The Beautyful Ones are a series of works that once again sees Njideka Akunyili Crosby combine painting, drawing, fabric and found imagery to create dense and complex works on paper. This particular body of work draws on the complexities of the artist’s Nigerian heritage (where she lived until the age of sixteen) and her contemporary life in the USA (where she has lived ever since). These rich tapestries depict Nigerian youths at various ages in a plethora of scenes. By using images, textiles and painting – she begins to unpick her varied upbringing as well as share a collective look towards the complexities of African and diasporic experiences. The publication expands further on the intricate details found within the images, with an overview provided by Siddhartha Mitter.
