Wiebke Leister’s research investigates the nature of photographic portraiture beyond the limits of individual likeness – focussing on representations of faciality in relation to its facial canvas. This April she travelled in Japan to visit Noh masters and their works to research the visualisation of angry sprits.

In this exhibition we will be meeting Hannya. And Namanari. And possibly Hashi-Hime or Masukami. Female demons that emerge from Japanese Noh drama and storytelling. She will be met in different settings, figurations and materialities, but we will encounter her through her transformative states as a woman who has become an angry sprit – through pain or betrayal.
