10×10 Photobooks by Women (working title), the next project in nonprofit 10×10 Photobooks’ ongoing series of reading rooms, will focus on photobooks by female photographers. Female photographers make up a large percentage of the photobook community, yet their numbers in the top prizes and heavily promoted books are relatively small in comparison to their male peers.
How the books are selected for The 10×10 Photobooks by Women (TWP) project
The project’s reading room selection will be formed by ten female selectors (either in teams or individually) from around the world who have each selected ten photobooks (Hence, the title “10×10”.) The project’s selectors are specialists in the photobook field, and have made selections that focus primarily on photobooks from their respective regions.
Reading room tour for TWP
The reading room will launch in fall 2018 and tour through 2019 to multiple venues, including the New York Public Library (NYC), Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), PGH Photo at the Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh and Fototeca Latinoamericana (Buenos Aires). Talks and presentations on photobooks by women and its history are planned for most venues. At the end of the tour the books will be donated as a complete collection to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
‘Book on books’ Publication for TWP
As 10×10 Photobooks has done in their three previous reading room projects, a comprehensive ‘book-on-books’ publication with images and texts for all the photobooks in the reading room will be published in fall 2018.
All female, all the time!
