Sonja Thomsen works with photography, sculpture, collage and light-based installation. With a background in both biology and studio art, and a deep interest in physics, her art practice uses light as a means to time travel—creating speculative collaborations with overlooked women photographers from the Bauhaus and Black Mountain College.
Proofs, Tangents, and Echoes is about methodology. Proof: the way light strikes a surface becomes a material record, the way photography is the index of a happening. Tangent: the geometric point where two paths touch without crossing, how I keep finding fascinating women like Maria Agnesi and Hazel Larsen Archer, arriving at similar questions through different routes across time. Echo: sound returning transformed, the way history reverberates when I stand in the spaces once occupied.
The exhibition brings together five years of iterative work; sculpture, photography, collage, built and rebuilt as each piece informed the next.
Proofs, Tangents and Echoes is on show at Kiehle Gallery, St. Cloud State University, Minnesota, eastern edge of campus from 26 February to 1st April 2026. Gallery opening hours are: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM.
