Swiss photographer Ester Vonplon’s (b. 1980) artistic practice explores natural environments. Here, she is less interested in how human activity affects the landscape, in ways that are becoming increasingly evident than in places that are – apparently – still intact and pristine. Conscious of how fragile these ecosystems are, she is keen to make a photographic record of the nature there before what is potentially its imminent demise, brought about by climate change and human intervention. Vonplon sees her work as a memento mori – a visual expression of the vulnerability and transience of nature.

Her work invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between humans and the environment, and on the consequences of human activity.
