Spin is Royal Scottish Academy’s monthly contemporary art discussion group. There are a limited number of tickets available for non-members to join one of Spin’s special out-of-hours exhibition tour and conversation events. This month, the group will be heading to the Royal Academy Building to discuss Catherine Opie | To Be Seen, with curator Imogen Gibbon.
Curated in collaboration with the artist and touring to Edinburgh from the National Portrait Gallery, London, this is the first major museum exhibition by the American artist Catherine Opie ever to be shown in the UK. The exhibition features nearly 80 portraits by Opie alongside a selection of portraits from Scotland’s national collection, prompting questions around the who, why and how of portraits. Journey through 30 years of the artist’s work as she questions representation of home, intimacy and family, and explores politics, identity and power structures.
