Women of Belfast is a new book celebrating the histories of Belfast women through their family photographs. Discover the personal stories behind the images and how family albums can reveal aspects of our shared history that official records often overlook.
The Women of Belfast photo album project is a digital archive that shares the histories of women from Belfast, reflected in their family albums and archives. Developed in partnership with the Falls Community Council, the project worked with contributors to record their histories across generations.
Bringing these visual stories together in a new publication, Women of Belfast offers a deeper understanding of the experiences, strength and resilience of Belfast women. Through diverse personal perspectives, the book moves beyond reductive stereotypes to reveal the complexity of our shared histories.
The project also considers the photographs that are missing, or were consciously never taken, and what their absence tells us about the sensitivities surrounding the public sharing of personal histories.
Women of Belfast is part of a wider digital archive project developed in partnership with the Falls Community Council and the Shankill Shared Women’s Centre, led by researcher Laurence McKeown and the Photo Museum Ireland team.
