Photojournalist and documentary photographer Jillian Edelstein will talk about her photographic life at POST, Brighton on 5 July.

She started out as an assistant to a fashion photographer in the 1980s before moving into press photography.  Growing up white in apartheid South Africa led Edelstein to feelings of ‘anger and guilt.’ She says: ‘Photography was a way, for me, of channelling those emotions’, and that ‘At the time I believed that by pointing a camera at security police, or at Casspirs (armoured personnel carriers) cruising the townships, or by documenting clashes between protestors and riot police I might help to change the situation in our country’ (Edelstein, 2002).

Edelstein left South Africa for London, England in 1985 in order to gain more editorial and educational experience. She studied Photojournalism at the London College of Communication then worked for The Sunday Times as a freelancer.  She is a multi-award winning photographer who’s work has been published and exhibited internationally with a career spanning over 40 years.
