Marie and Bolette took professional portraits and landscape photos. But a box marked “private” contained photographs that showed playing with gender roles and how one should look in front of a camera around the turn of the last century.
The two photographers Marie Høeg and Bolette Berg had a studio in Horten from 1895–1903, and in recent years their photographs have resonated all over the world!
Berg and Høeg started a photo studio in the town to photograph portraits of people who lived here. The special thing was that they also took portraits of each other, where they played with gender roles and how one could look in front of the camera. In addition, Marie and Bolette were active in the women’s movement, and they lived together as lovers all their lives.
Berg & Høeg is a permanent exhibition at Preus Museum. To find out more please go to the direct link.
