Family Ties at The Gallery Cafe, St Margaret’s House, London

Family Ties, curated by Kasia Kowalska, features thirteen artists who address compelling questions around how photography can both shape and reveal our distinctive perspectives on the subjects of memory, family, migration and temporality.

Photography is a medium that has given us a unique insight into the human experience. Over five billion photographs are taken every day – almost 95 percent of which are taken with smartphones – it has enabled us to record our lives and the lives of our families in ever-increasing volumes. Yet, photography is not a passive medium and has the capacity to shape and alter the way we experience the world, how we relate to others, and how we see ourselves.

How does photography shape our memories and experience?
Can a photographic image reinforce or reshape familial ties?
What do our photographs reveal about how we interact with our loved ones?

Considering these and many other questions, the artists in this exhibition offer their contemporary response and make evident why the family photographic archive remains a central subject in photography and invite us to delve deeper into the connections between the photographic image, temporality, migration and memory.
