Fifty years ago, in January 1971, Linda Nochlin’s essay Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? was published in the American journal ARTnews. Few art historians have been as influential, prolific, and radical as Nochlin. Between 1960 and 2017, she wrote seventeen books and numerous articles examining the social history of women in the arts and advocating for equality.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the essay, KIOSK contextualizes Nochlin’s work alongside that of several artists, writers, activists, and designers. Following a widespread open call in 2021, KIOSK collected signed and anonymous textual and visual contributions in the form of essays, poems, drawings, moving images, and photographs in four digitally distributed fanzines. KIOSK received proposals from a wide variety of people – from local students to acclaimed artists, from art world dropouts to sell-outs.
The four fanzines are bundled into one publication with texts by Olave Nduwanje, Delphine Bedel ao. The publication is edited by Els Roelandt and Jessica Gysel. Chloé D’hauwe gave the fanzine its no fuzz design.Free for participating artists and authors, 7 euro at KIOSK (send us an email), 10 euro at bookshops Copyright in Ghent and Antwerp and at Rile in Brussels.
