KUNST HAUS WIEN is delighted to announce a photographic workshop with Finnish photographer Elina Brotherus on the topic “A NEW APPROACH TO AUTOBIOGRAPHY” in conjunction with the first comprehensive mid-career retrospective of the photographer in Austria.

The workshop will be held from June 28-July 1, 2018, at the KUNST HAUS WIEN. It will be based in the extraordinary rooftop apartment of Friedensreich Hundertwasser above the KUNST HAUS WIEN where lectures and discussions will take place, and participants will be shooting there and throughout the city of Vienna.

OVERVIEW:

“Self-portraiture is a tricky and charged subject matter as everyone who has practiced it knows. In this 4-day workshop we will discuss its various aspects and in the assignment go beyond the ordinary self-depiction. Working alone alternates with working together as a group. Sharing our time and our images is an important part of the experience. Emphasis will also be put on the selection and editing process which is a crucial part of the work of a photographer.” – Elina Brotherus

Prior task to the participants before the workshop starts:
– Produce a two-page chronological “time-line” that spans your life. Note personal and public events that have had a meaningful, memorable effect on your life – landmark events, visual experiences, your perception of things around. What has formed the YOU of the present, what has been significant to the formation of your identity?
– Prepare a small portfolio (analogue or digital), a selection of 10-20 photographs of yours that you will present to the group as an introduction to your work and your thinking.

July 2, 2018, 6 pm: Closing evening with barbecue and presentation
The participation fee is € 600 (excl. 20% VAT) for four days, max. 15 participants.
Two discounted places are available for students for € 450 (excl. 20% VAT)
The price includes: Tuition from Elina Brotherus, daily meal, drinks, snacks and barbecue on the closing evening, Assistance from the KUNST HAUS WIEN production team and portfolio review with the curator of the KUNST HAUS WIEN. Workshop language is English.
