Enter The Archive – Part 2
Collaborative project with The National Galleries Scotland and Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Fast Forward continues its collaboration with the National Galleries of Scotland, initiated during Part 1 of the Enter the Archive project. For Part 2, this partnership is further expanded through the inclusion of Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales.
Through an open call Fast Forward appointed Dr Briony Carlin to work on researching and drafting a policy for collecting and archiving photography with Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) priorities at its heart. The policy will be for use within public sector institutions, and it will include reference to the potential uses of new technologies such as AI. It is expected that the policy will feed into a bigger multi-partner research project.
Carlin will work across the collections at National Galleries Scotland and Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales where they will assist to co-ordinate two onsite research workshops and interviews with institutional staff and other identified individuals. The research will produce the first draft of a policy by July 2026.
Dr Briony Carlin is an independent researcher and Lecturer in Art History at Newcastle University, where she teaches art theory and curating. Her work applies feminist perspectives to examine how we encounter photography in different material forms and institutional environments. Most recently, this has taken shape in her forthcoming book, Encounters with Photobooks: How Art and Experience Matter (Leuven University Press, 2026). Her curatorial work ranges from community-based practice, such as Binder: Art Book Club with The NewBridge Project, to national collections, as former Assistant Curator of Photographs at the Victoria and Albert Museum. She lives in Newcastle upon Tyne.
