PROVOCATIVE MATERIALS FOR THOUGHT 思想のための挑発的資料 / Photobooks by Japanese Women: A Reading Room is dedicated to the photobooks of 26 Japanese women photographers. On display are a wide range of photobooks representing the work of photographers active from the postwar era to the present day. All books will be available for consultation, visitors are encouraged to engage with their materiality (albeit with care).
Photobooks are widely recognised as an essential element of the history of Japanese photography, and yet Japanese women photographers and their photobooks have been long overlooked in art historical accounts and by popular culture. With Provocative Materials for Thought we seek to platform women photographers without offering a limiting interpretation of their work, instead creating a space for a speculative rewriting of the history of Japanese photography in which women’s contributions are rightfully acknowledged.
