Talk series: Photo-Rituals for Disappearance by Marilene Ribeiro at Photobook Cafe, London

Launched at The Photographers’ Gallery last year, Marilene Ribeiro’s Photo-Rituals for Disappearance has been nominated as one of LensCulture’s Favourite Photobooks of the Year and also shortlisted for the EIBOOKS Awards 2025.

Photo-Rituals for Disappearance draws on personal lived experience to celebrate the ancient, magical way women deal with love and remedy. It is a limited-edition, hand-stitched book, inspired by women’s recipe/ritual books, and crafted in collaboration with other women.

Marilene Ribeiro is an award-winning Brazilian visual artist, researcher, and activist whose practice engages with environmental and human rights issues through a decolonial lens rooted in the Global South. Her work explores the political agency of photography and its potential as a tool for social and environmental change.

The evening will feature an informal artist talk and open Q&A with Marilene Ribeiro in a seated gallery setting, offering audiences the opportunity to learn more about her practice, research, and recent projects.
