The exhibition is based on the acclaimed book Women Behind the Camera: 1848–1968 by Eva Dahlman and Magnus Bremmer (Arena Publishing, 2024). It is curated by Dragana Vujanovic Östlind in collaboration with the authors and Lena Wilhelmsson.
Women Behind the Camera: 1848–1968 is a photographic biography charting the history of professional women photographers in Sweden. It tells the story of how, early on, photography became a female profession, and how women across the country established themselves as entrepreneurs, running their own studios and forging careers through the camera lens. It is also the first comprehensive account to highlight the vital role women have played in Swedish photography.
