Launched in June 2008, Women in Photography is an innovative website founded by artists Amy Elkins and Cara Phillips that showcases the work of women artists. The internet-based project focuses on exhibiting work outside of the traditional model of the commercial art world, allowing it to reach a global audience and to provide opportunities at no cost. Mixing emerging photographers, mid-career and established artists, WIPNYC’s curatorial focus is to feature the diversity of work being made by women artists.
Women in Photography has collaborated with many independent women curators, Aperture Foundation, LACMA, MoCP, Lesile Tonkonow, Lightwork, P.P.O.W Gallery and Humble Arts Foundation.
In 2009 Women in Photography launched its first grant program. With the generous support of LTI/Lightside Photographic and Kodak, they have given twelve-thousand dollars in funds and materials to support women artists.
